Taika Waititi fires back at critics over "Klara and the Sun" poor reception

Director Taika Waititi has launched a social media defense of his new film, "Klara and the Sun," after it was met with negative reviews and a disappointing box office opening.

According to Variety, Waititi shared a poster for the film on Instagram and declared he hasn't read a critic's review in nearly 15 years. In the post, he called critics "sad lost souls" who couldn't achieve their artistic dreams.

"The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit. Irrelevant. Out of touch. Obsolete. In the bin," Waititi wrote, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, which stars Jenna Ortega as an outdated companion android trying to connect with a sick child, had a rough debut weekend. Variety reports it opened in 15th place at the domestic box office, earning just $720,000 from 880 theaters.

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi discussed the film's themes of artificial intelligence. He stated that while AI's use in the industry is likely inevitable, he views it as a tool to work with humans, not a replacement for them.

Ortega, who plays the lead android, also recently said she avoids reading reviews of her work, telling Vogue it would send her "into a psychosis of some sort."
