The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod shut down before release
A fan-made multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC has been scrapped after its creators say they got a warning from PlayStation.
The mod, developed by a group called Specizer, was reportedly funded through Patreon and had been in development since January. According to VGC, it featured custom perks, maps, and limited listening mechanics, and footage had been shared online.
However, the team announced the project's cancellation, claiming the request came from Sony Interactive Entertainment. In a statement, the modder wrote they were told not to release the mod, per the outlet.
The developers expressed sadness that the work, which was slated for release this month, will not see the light of day. They thanked supporters and hinted at moving on to a new, original project.
An official multiplayer component for The Last of Us Part 2 was originally planned but was cut during development. Naughty Dog later worked on a separate live-service project, The Last of Us Online, but that title was also canceled in 2023.
