The Odyssey sails past Jurassic World as Universal's biggest movie ever
Christopher Nolan’s epic "The Odyssey" has officially become the highest-grossing film in Universal Pictures' 114-year history, according to a studio announcement reported by Variety.
The milestone was confirmed over the weekend. The Matt Damon-led film's global haul now stands at $1.684 billion, per projections from Deadline. That pushes it past the previous Universal record holder, 2015's "Jurassic World," which had grossed $1.677 billion.
Universal chairman Donna Langley celebrated the achievement, crediting Nolan and producer Emma Thomas. Langley said the pair created "one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history," calling it a "generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself."
The film's box office dominance is not limited to studio records. As TheWrap notes, "The Odyssey" is also the highest-grossing R-rated film ever and the biggest earner in IMAX history. It's the first non-sequel to cross $1 billion overseas since 2009's "Avatar."
The record caps a massive summer for Universal, which now commands 26% of the 2026 box office market share. "The Odyssey" is projected to pass $600 million domestically this weekend, making it one of only 18 films to ever reach that mark.
It also marks a major career peak for Nolan, representing his biggest opening and highest-grossing film to date, surpassing even "The Dark Knight Rises."
