Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot hits $400 million global box office

Director Zach Cregger's 'Resident Evil' reboot has punched through a major box office ceiling. According to Variety, the film has now reached a global total of $400 million. It earned $157.399 million domestically and $242.6 million from other territories to hit that exact mark.

This makes the film the new highest-grossing chapter in the horror franchise's 24-year history, surpassing the $312 million worldwide haul of 2016's 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter'.

The movie launched strong in September with a $60 million domestic opening weekend, which was a series best. Variety reports China is its leading international market, contributing a major sum, with the United Kingdom and Mexico also bringing in significant revenue.

Sony produced the film for $75 million, guaranteeing a healthy profit. The film's success stands in stark contrast to the studio's last attempt to revive the series, 2021's 'Welcome to Raccoon City,' which only made $42 million globally.
