Zack Snyder's The Last Photograph Gets Brutal First Reactions at TIFF

Zack Snyder's The Last Photograph Gets Brutal First Reactions at TIFF

Zack Snyder's first independent film, 'The Last Photograph', premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, and the early reactions are harsh. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the action thriller marks Snyder's 13th feature and his first indie production.

The film stars Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, with a score by Hans Zimmer. It follows an ex-DEA agent searching South American mountains for his murdered siblings' children, aided by a photographer who witnessed the killings. Snyder directed from a script by Kurt Johnstad and served as his own cinematographer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which compiled social media reactions, critics at the festival were largely scathing. One called the film "grotesque, shameless and an utter disgrace," while another labeled it a "nasty piece of business" that was "boring" and "bloated."

Multiple reactions described the movie as excessively violent, tedious, and a "mess." One viewer suggested it felt "functionally indistinguishable from Sound of Freedom," while another said watching it was like "when the boys felt watching Medellín in Entourage."

A few reactions acknowledged Snyder's striking cinematography and the film's departure from his usual studio-backed work, but the overall tone was overwhelmingly negative. One critic simply called it "the worst film I've seen this year at TIFF."
