The show
The Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins when King Viserys breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.
People are pretty split on this season, but the cast is holding it together. The acting, especially from Matt Smith as Daemon and Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra, is widely praised, and the visuals are still stunning. The big problem is the story, which a lot of people felt dragged, with painfully slow pacing that made the political scheming feel like a slog. While some viewers found new characters like James Norton's Ormund interesting, the core Targaryens, particularly Rhaenyra and Daemon, are frustrating many with their decisions, leaving the season feeling like a gorgeous but uneven setup.
