After thirty-five years abroad, Donal returns to his native Scotland to make amends with his estranged brother Sandy.

Brian Cox and Alan Cumming are the whole show here, playing estranged brothers Sandy and Donal in a reunion story that’s being called visually stunning but painfully unoriginal. People are calling it absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the humor lands perfectly, but the plot—a man returning to Scotland after 35 years—feels like something they’ve seen a dozen times before. The acting, especially from Cumming and a warmly received Shirley Henderson, is keeping it afloat, but the slow pacing is a dealbreaker for a lot of viewers.
The trend appears once there are a couple of scoring runs to compare.
