The film

This biopic splits people right down the middle. Jaafar Jackson is the clear highlight, with many saying he nails the performance, from young Michael's talent in the Jackson Five to his rise as a solo icon. The story itself, though, is the main problem, widely seen as a familiar and surface-level retelling that avoids the tougher parts of his life. A few performances, like Miles Teller's John Branca, land okay, but others, including Colman Domingo's Joseph Jackson, get a lot of criticism. It's a movie that works when it focuses on the music, but stumbles when it tries to tell the man's story.
