Borderlands 4 player count spikes with new DLC character and free weekend
A new downloadable character is giving Borderlands 4 a major boost on Steam. According to IGN, the Vault Hunter named Loveless the Hacker has helped the game's concurrent player count jump to around 26,000, its highest since November of last year.
Loveless, a hacker-turned-assassin who shares her mind with a digital virus, is part of the larger Story Pack 2 expansion. She can be purchased separately for $9.99, a move praised by players in Steam reviews cited by the outlet.
The DLC character isn't the only draw. IGN reports Gearbox Software is also running a 50% off sale on the base game, bringing its price to $34.99, alongside a free-to-play weekend that lasts until September 14.
This combination has pushed Borderlands 4 into the top five sellers on Steam in the U.S., per the report. Player reviews highlighted by IGN specifically credit Loveless's design and voice acting, performed by Carin Gilfry, for bringing them back to the game.
It remains to be seen if the increased interest will last beyond the promotional weekend. The report notes the looter-shooter had been struggling to maintain 10,000 concurrent players on Steam for months prior to this resurgence.
