Clayface Aims for $25M Debut as DC's Latest Horror Tries to Top Strong Holmes Doc

Warner Bros. is projecting a domestic box office launch of $25 to $30 million for its new DC horror film, Clayface, per The Hollywood Reporter. The film, starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie, is playing in over 3,400 North American theaters. The James Watkins-directed movie cost $44 million to make, a much smaller budget than last summer's DC release, Supergirl.

Offering competition is A24's documentary about the former Theranos CEO, You Can See Everything. After a bigger-than-expected $15 million debut last weekend, the film is expanding to 2,600 screens and is projected to earn at least $18 million.

Clayface is the third feature from the DC slate overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Deadline notes that the film is a stand-alone, R-rated body horror story set in a version of Gotham City, though Batman does not appear. /Film reports the movie consciously avoids connections to other DC films.

Several other films are also debuting this weekend. Laika's animated stop-motion feature Wildwood is hitting 2,926 theaters, while a Sony film starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, Klara and the Sun, is opening. Amazon MGM is releasing the comedy Ali G: Who Iz I? in theaters for one week before it streams on Prime Video, and the romantic fantasy Wicker is also arriving.
