Klara and the Sun loses over half its theaters on opening day

Jenna Ortega's new sci-fi film 'Klara and the Sun' hit theaters with a whimper, not a bang. According to Collider, its North American release was drastically scaled back, opening in only 880 theaters today.
That's a massive cut from the 1,900 locations initially projected for the film earlier this month. The Taika Waititi-directed movie, also starring Amy Adams and Steve Buscemi, is based on Kazuo Ishiguro's bestselling novel about an Artificial Friend named Klara.
The outlet notes the theater drop is a second blow for the film, which is also facing a difficult critical reception. The limited release puts its box office prospects in immediate jeopardy, as the film will have far fewer opportunities to attract audiences over its opening weekend.
'Klara and the Sun' is now playing in a much narrower release than planned.
