Collider says Julianne Moore should win an Oscar for 'The Debut'

Collider says Julianne Moore should win an Oscar for 'The Debut'

Per a review from Collider, Julianne Moore delivers a performance in Jesse Eisenberg's new film "The Debut" that should guarantee her an Oscar nomination, if not a win. In the A24 comedy, Moore plays Mona, a mother whose children have left home, leading her to join a community theater production.

The outlet describes Mona being embraced by an eccentric troupe, including characters played by Halle Bailey and Paul Giamatti, despite her lack of acting skill. Giamatti's director character, Jerry, pushes her into method acting to improve, which leads Mona to deeply embody her role.

Collider reports that Eisenberg created an entire fictional musical, "Nosy Neighbors," as the film's backbone, with music reminiscent of classic Broadway. Cinematographer Drew Daniels is said to employ a mix of wide stage shots and intense close-ups.

The review states the film portrays the theater community as supportive, not as a subject for mockery, and that Moore's layered performance carries the entire project on her back.
