Cruz and Bardem Get 15.5-Minute Ovation at 'Bunker' Venice Premiere
Penélope Cruz wept and kissed her husband Javier Bardem as the audience gave their new film a mammoth standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, per Variety.
According to the outlet, the applause for 'Bunker' lasted a whopping 15.5 minutes at its Tuesday night premiere, making it the festival's most enthusiastic reception so far this year. The ovation just missed beating the 17-minute record set by Pedro Almodóvar's 'The Room Next Door' in 2024.
Director Florian Zeller had the cast, which also includes Patrick Schwarzenegger and Paul Dano, step forward individually to receive the applause. Cruz, wearing a red dress, was seen mouthing 'Thank you!' to fans and shaking hands during the lengthy display.
The film stars real-life couple Bardem and Cruz as a married couple whose 17-year relationship fractures after the husband, an architect, agrees to build a survival bunker for a tech billionaire played by Dano. Zeller told Variety the film was inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut' and aimed to use the actors' real-life partnership to create an unsettling authenticity.
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights and is planning an awards-qualifying run later this year ahead of a theatrical release in early 2027.
