Darlene Love Doc Premieres at TIFF, Produced by Taraji P Henson
The Toronto International Film Festival is premiering a new documentary entirely about singer Darlene Love, titled "Darlene Love: I Know Where I've Been." According to Variety, the feature-length film puts the legendary singer front and center, a step beyond her appearance in the 2013 documentary "20 Feet From Stardom."
Director Barry Avrich reportedly spent two years on the project, which includes new studio performances of Love, now in her 80s, backed by a band led by Paul Shaffer. The film also features interviews and explores Love's career, from classic Phil Spector recordings to her roles in the "Lethal Weapon" movies and on Broadway in "Hairspray."
Producer Taraji P. Henson, whose company TPH Entertainment helped complete the film, told Variety she was compelled to tell Love's story, calling her a "hidden figure" with a recognizable voice whose full story needed to be known.
The documentary takes its title from a lyric in the civil rights anthem "I Know Where I'm Going," which Love performed nightly in "Hairspray." Variety also released an exclusive first look at the film's trailer ahead of its Monday afternoon premiere at TIFF.
