Lawrence Lamont to direct Ice Cube's 'Last Friday' for New Line

Ice Cube's long-dormant comedy franchise is finally getting a new installment, with a fresh director at the helm. According to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Lawrence Lamont has been tapped to direct 'Last Friday.'

Ice Cube is writing the script, will star, and is producing the movie for New Line. This marks the first new entry in the buddy comedy series since 2002's 'Friday After Next.'

The project is set to film in Southern California with support from a state tax credit program. The report states the production was allocated over $11 million in incentives and plans for a 40-day shoot.

Lamont broke out last year directing the buddy comedy 'One of Them Days,' starring Keke Palmer and SZA. His background includes directing award-nominated music videos for artists like Big Sean and J. Cole.

The original 'Friday,' starring Cube and Chris Tucker, was released in 1995 and became a cult hit, leading to two sequels.
