Denzel Washington Thriller 'The Little Things' Becomes Netflix Hit Years Later
A crime thriller starring Denzel Washington has found a major second life on Netflix, per MovieWeb. The 2021 film "The Little Things" has surged onto the platform's global top 10 movie chart, landing at number six.
The film, directed by John Lee Hancock, stars Washington as a burnt-out deputy sheriff drawn into a serial murder investigation in Los Angeles. Rami Malek plays a detective on the case, and Jared Leto portrays the unsettling prime suspect.
"The Little Things" was originally released in 2021 as part of Warner Bros.' controversial strategy to debut films simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. It opened at number one at the domestic box office, grossing $4.8 million, which was the best debut for an R-rated film since theaters had largely been closed the previous March. Its final worldwide gross was approximately $30.8 million against a $30 million budget.
MovieWeb notes that the film's ambiguous, unresolved tone, which frustrated some critics upon its initial release, may now be better suited to a streaming audience. The outlet suggests its position on the chart follows another popular crime thriller, "The Whisper Man," which currently tops the same list.
Leto's performance earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations at the time of the film's original release.
