Quentin Tarantino shocks AFI Fest with first 17 minutes of Cliff Booth sequel

Quentin Tarantino delivered an unexpected treat at the AFI Fest on Friday night. Following a screening and Q&A for his 2019 film, the director told the TCL Chinese Theatre audience he could either talk about his sequel project or show them footage, per TheWrap. He then unveiled the opening 17 minutes of "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth."

The footage reveals a Brad Pitt back in his Oscar-winning role, but now in a different era. The story picks up in the summer of 1977, nearly a decade following the events of "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood." Cliff Booth has traded stunt work for a job running the New Beverly Cinema, the real-life LA arthouse theater.

The clip shown reportedly begins with an extended scene from a fictional blaxploitation film playing at the theater, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Pitt's character is seen in the projection booth, reciting lines and refilling soda. He later calls his father, played by Peter Weller, and interacts with two men outside the theater who seem to recognize him.

According to TheWrap, the scene escalates into a classic Tarantino-style sequence involving stolen goods, including a Best Director Oscar statuette, and dealings with gangsters. The film is a creative team-up, with a screenplay from Tarantino and direction handled by David Fincher.

The project is set for a Netflix release on November 25. The rest of the Q&A touched on Tarantino's affection for the hangout vibe of the original film and his casting of the late Burt Reynolds in a role that never made it to screen.
