Godzilla Minus Zero director talks sequel pressures and turning down Hollywood

Takashi Yamazaki, the filmmaker behind the Godzilla Minus One and Minus Zero movies, says he had to turn down big Hollywood offers to focus on the kaiju sequel. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that directors like Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams were among those who praised his Oscar-winning work, leading to multiple project proposals.

Yamazaki told the outlet he consciously avoided making Minus Zero with an American audience in mind, wanting to keep the story rooted in Japan. He also said he urged his team to ignore the massive success of the first film and focus simply on making a great movie.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the new sequel is set in 1949 and features the monster King Ghidorah. The film also marks a technical first for Japan, as it was shot using IMAX cameras.

Yamazaki said the chance of a third film is currently fifty-fifty, and he would be sad if this was his last Godzilla movie. His next project is the English-language film Grandgear, which Abrams is producing. The director also explained that a fellow monster movie filmmaker, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, landed a cameo role in the new movie.
