Interview With the Vampire director explains 4K restoration and horror without scares
Director Neil Jordan recently spoke to Variety about a new high definition release for his classic film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
The restored version is now out on 4K Ultra HD Blu ray, packaged with bonus features. Those include unseen deleted scenes and two new special features. One discusses the movie's cinematography with Jordan and editor Mick Audsley, while another focuses on production design.
Jordan explained why the restoration was needed, noting the last time he saw a 25th anniversary print in a theater it was so dark he couldn't see the picture. He said scanning it frame by frame was a chance to bring the movie back to life as originally shot.
The director also reflected on the film's unique horror approach. Per Variety, he recalled the studio asking if the movie was scary. Jordan said he told them there would be no jump scares because the vampires themselves are the monsters. The terror, he argued, had to come from within the characters and the dread of eternal life, which he credits to author Anne Rice's original story.
