Javier Bardem to Star in HBO Finance Drama The Spread
HBO has ordered a new drama series called The Spread straight to series, and Javier Bardem is attached to star and executive produce, as Variety confirmed.
The show is created by Bill Dubuque, co-creator of Ozark, and Sean Sansiveri. Matthew Vaughn is set to direct and also executive produce. The project is a joint venture from HBO and Fifth Season TV Studio, with Makeready and Topic Studios also producing.
According to the logline reported by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, the series is set in Miami, described as 'Wall Street South.' Bardem will play a visionary billionaire who gathers ambitious and dangerous people to target the markets that power America, aiming to shift the economic center of gravity to the city.
Francesca Orsi, HBO's head of drama, said the network was excited to explore Miami with this team, per both outlets.
For Bardem, this adds to a run of recent TV roles including Apple's Cape Fear and Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. He has several films due later this year.
This marks the first credited TV writing role for Sansiveri, while Dubuque's recent work includes the Peacock series M.I.A.
