Jeff Probst says Survivor 51 'blows up the evolution' of the game
Survivor host Jeff Probst told TVLine the show is entering an 'Open Era' starting with the two-hour Season 51 premiere this Wednesday.
In an interview at a promotional event, Probst said the old 'New Era' format was becoming predictable. The new approach, which includes an episode titled 'Permanent Uncertainty,' aims to throw even savvy superfans for a loop.
He described the Open Era as a giant treasure chest containing every twist, advantage, and idol from the show's history. According to Probst, producers can now pull anything from that chest at any time, making each season potentially unique. He warned that being a superfan could now be a disadvantage because past patterns may no longer apply.
Probst teased that this approach will continue into Season 52 and beyond. He also hinted that classic Survivor themes might return soon and that the Season 51 premiere features some old-school Easter eggs and a very 'live' Tribal Council.
