John Mulaney Circling Maxwell Smart Role in Warner Bros. Get Smart Reboot

John Mulaney is being eyed for a major comeback to the big screen. According to reports from Variety and TheWrap, the comedian is circling the lead role of Agent Maxwell Smart in a new movie reboot of the spy comedy "Get Smart" at Warner Bros.

Per Variety, the project is currently in its initial development phase. TheWrap also notes the film is being described as a "reimagining" and remains in early development.

Seth Grahame-Smith, known for writing "The Lego Batman Movie" and 2025's "Now You See Me: Now You Don't," is set to pen the screenplay. Producers attached include Andrew Lazar and Charles Roven, the latter of whom produced "Oppenheimer."

The original "Get Smart" TV series, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, debuted in 1965 and ran for five seasons until 1970. The 2008 film adaptation starred Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway and earned over $230 million globally.

Mulaney's most recent starring role was hosting Netflix's "Everybody's Live with John Mulaney" in 2025. He is next set to appear in David O. Russell's sports biopic "Madden."
