Mahershala Ali Finally Made His Blade-Style Film After Marvel Project Collapsed
Mahershala Ali is finally swinging a blade on screen, just not the one fans expected. According to Variety, his new film "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother" just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Ali playing a Muslim hitman named Latif who goes on the run with his kids after his wife dies.
The movie, directed by Bassam Tariq, features Ali fighting enemies with a long blade. Per Variety, the actor had trained for the now-cancelled Marvel "Blade" movie before that project fell apart in 2024. He then applied those sword-fighting skills to this independent film.
The Hollywood Reporter notes Ali was eager for a physical role. He said the film appealed to him because it demanded deep emotional work while also satisfying a personal desire to perform demanding action sequences he had long wanted to tackle.
At the premiere, Ali praised his young co-star Adia, who plays his daughter. She told Variety that Ali created a supportive environment that helped her access challenging emotional moments during filming.
"Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother" hits theaters on September 25 via Amazon MGM.
