Marvel's Wolverine Review: Critics Praise Story, Slam Dated Gameplay

Marvel's Wolverine Review: Critics Praise Story, Slam Dated Gameplay

Insomniac Games' latest superhero outing, Marvel's Wolverine, has landed, but reviews suggest the gameplay hasn't evolved with its stunning visuals. According to VGC, the game is a "visual stunner" with best-in-class character models, but its core combat is described as "dated" and "uninspired."

VGC's review states that the game's strongest asset is its characters, highlighting the relationship between Logan and Jean Grey and praising Troy Baker's portrayal of Nathaniel Essex. The story, which follows Wolverine with Team X before his time with the X-Men, is considered a cohesive, well-told narrative.

However, per VGC, the gameplay fails to match the story's quality. The outlet reports that combat is repetitive, with enemies feeling spongy and fights becoming monotonous. Wolverine's claws are criticized for lacking a satisfying, lethal feel, more akin to "blunt kitchen knives" than deadly weapons.

Eurogamer's review echoes similar sentiments, noting that while Wolverine's characterization as a vulnerable and kind hero is a bright spot, the linear format becomes a "repetitive, overlong and overfamiliar slog." The outlet points out the game's reliance on familiar PlayStation action-game tropes, from parries to rage meters.

Both reviews note that the game's pacing could benefit from a shake-up, with VGC suggesting playable sections as other characters like Jean Grey or Mystique might have helped. Ultimately, while the narrative and presentation earn praise, critics agree the moment-to-moment action leaves Logan feeling declawed.
