Netflix Orders New Lonesome Dove Series from East of Eden Showrunners
Netflix has officially greenlit a new series adaptation of the classic western novel "Lonesome Dove." The project will be co-run by Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart, who are also the showrunners for the streamer's upcoming limited series "East of Eden," per Variety.
The series is based on Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1985 novel. The rights were secured by Teton Ridge Entertainment, which hired Kazan and Stuart to lead the new take. The novel was famously adapted into a hit 1989 CBS miniseries starring Robert Duvall.
According to a logline provided by the streamer, the series will follow former Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call as they embark on a dangerous cattle drive from Texas to Montana. The story is described as a sweeping odyssey exploring friendship, frontier justice, and the pursuit of meaning.
Kazan and Stuart will serve as writers, executive producers, and co-showrunners. Other executive producers include Teton Ridge Entertainment's Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, and Jen Gorton, along with Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana, and Curtis McMurtry representing the author's estate.
In a statement, Netflix executive Jinny Howe praised the creative team, saying they knew what Kazan and Stuart were capable of after "East of Eden." Kazan and Stuart said they approach the material "with love and respect."
