New Constantine Movie in Development, But Not the Keanu Sequel

A new Constantine movie is officially on the way at DC Studios, per a report from Deadline. However, this fresh adaptation is not the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 Keanu Reeves film that fans have been hoping for.
According to the report, director Francis Galluppi has been brought on to write the project. Galluppi is currently working on a new Evil Dead film. The announcement casts immediate doubt on the status of the Reeves-led sequel, which was reportedly in early development with the actor and original director Francis Lawrence attached.
Collider notes that DC Studios co-head James Gunn confirmed last year he had discussed a Constantine project with Reeves. However, Gunn also stated he had not yet seen a script. Actor Peter Stormare, who portrayed the Devil in the 2005 movie, has suggested Reeves was not satisfied with any scripts that had been developed.
This new film is likely intended for the main DC Universe, separate from the continuity of Reeves's version. Under DC's current structure, the older project could potentially continue as an "Elseworlds" tale, but its future is now uncertain.
