World War Z sequel script update from director Edward Berger sparks fresh hope

The long-dormant sequel to the 2013 zombie blockbuster World War Z is showing new signs of life, per MovieWeb.

Director Edward Berger, now attached to the project, recently revealed his team is "working hard" on the script. He spoke about the effort while attending the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.

Berger emphasized a focus on not disappointing fans. "We only want to bring something to the fans and to this idea that really furthers the story," he told Screen Off Script. He described the goal as creating something new that "can say something about our time."

The project has a famously troubled history. After the original film's release, directors J.A. Bayona and later David Fincher were attached before the sequel was shelved due to financing and scheduling issues. It was revived in 2026 with Berger at the helm.

Brad Pitt is set to reprise his starring role. No production or release timeline was mentioned, but Berger's comments confirm active development is underway.
