Practical Magic 2 aims to end Spider-Man's box office reign with $40M debut
The box office is getting witchy this weekend. According to Variety, the long-awaited sequel "Practical Magic 2" is conjuring up a projected $30 to $40 million domestic debut from 4,000 theaters. That could be enough to snatch the number one spot away from the superhero juggernaut "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which has held the top position for six consecutive weekends.
Warner Bros. reportedly spent $75 million to produce the fantasy film, which picks up the story 25 years later. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock return as the Owens sisters, with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing reprising their roles. Joey King and Maisie Williams join the cast as their daughters. Internationally, per Variety, the film is aiming for an additional $18 to $25 million from 77 territories, putting its potential global opening between $48 and $65 million.
In other box office news, Variety also reports that Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Ravi Ahuja credits the massive success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" to its emotional core. The film has reportedly pulled in over $2.4 billion worldwide and is on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
Also new this weekend is Disney's Oasis documentary "Don't Look Back in Anger," which is eyeing a $5 to $7 million start from 1,200 theaters.
