Report: Gears of War: E-Day cost $500M to make, sold around 400k copies

A bombshell report from IGN claims the latest Gears of War game had a staggering half-billion dollar budget.
The outlet cites information from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who called the $500 million figure for Gears of War: E-Day "a real number." This comes alongside sales data reported by The Verge, which suggests the title has sold just over 400,000 copies across PC and Xbox consoles since launch.
IGN's report notes the game was a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass, complicating its financial picture. Analysis from Alinea Analytics estimated the game had generated about $42.1 million in revenue from roughly 311,000 sales on Steam and Xbox a week after launch.
The article states Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently highlighted other franchises like Minecraft and Call of Duty, but made no mention of the Gears title. Meanwhile, Eurogamer reported on internal studio concern about potential layoffs at developer The Coalition following the game's release.
Studio head Mike Crump has framed success differently, telling the BBC their goal was to be the best-looking game on Xbox and showcase the hardware.
