Soulslike Valor Mortis Prices at $40 to Be an 'And Game' in Crowded October

A new first-person soulslike called Valor Mortis is charging into the crowded October release schedule, and its publisher has a specific pricing strategy to survive.

Per PC Gamer, the game from the Ghostrunner creators is set for an October 13 launch. It will debut alongside major titles like a Hellraiser game, Silver Pines, and the 1.0 launch of Enshrouded, all squeezed in before Grand Theft Auto VI's October arrival.

The game's publisher, Lyrical Games, is pricing Valor Mortis at $40. CEO Blake Rochkind explained the logic in an interview, stating the goal is to be an 'and game.' This means they want players to feel they can pick it up alongside other, more expensive blockbuster releases.

Rochkind attributed the strategy to advice from another developer who found success with a similar lower price point. The quote that stuck with him was, 'We never regretted being an 'and' game.'

Valor Mortis is a new IP from a AA studio. A recent demo was reportedly well-received, particularly for its handling of first-person melee combat.
