The villainous Ultron is making a comeback in the upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest, and his role is tied directly to modern fears about artificial intelligence, per ScreenRant.
Showrunner Terry Matalas revealed that Ultron, last seen in 2015, has evolved. The character is no longer the purely genocidal robot from his first appearance. Matalas explained that Ultron has been studying human culture while trapped inside Vision's mind, giving him a new perspective.
According to the report, Vision chose not to destroy Ultron years ago, instead imprisoning him within a digital space alongside other saved AI programs like JARVIS and FRIDAY. This sets up a dysfunctional family dynamic, with Ultron as a problematic father figure to Vision.
Matalas framed the series as an exploration of identity through its artificial characters, who are all on a quest to understand humanity. The show's themes are positioned as a direct response to contemporary anxieties about AI's growing influence on creativity and employment.
Actor Paul Bettany described Vision's starting point in the series as a being living in seclusion, trying to comprehend humanity all over again.
