Winx Club owner's studio hires former Cinecittà boss as new CEO
Nicola Maccanico, the former head of Rome's famed Cinecittà Studios, has been named the new CEO of Colorado Film, per Variety. The production company is owned by Italy's Rainbow Group, which is run by Iginio Straffi, creator of the Winx Club animated series.
Maccanico previously held senior roles at Warner Bros. and Sky Italia. He led a major renovation of the Cinecittà studio complex before stepping down in 2024 after a management change by Italy's government.
Colorado Film is known for successful live-action movies. Its 2024 Netflix original "The Tearsmith" hit number one globally in Netflix's non-English film chart. Other notable titles include the "Me Contro Te" comedy franchise and the thriller "The Girl in the Fog."
The company's upcoming projects include the English-language romantic comedy "Blame It on Rome," starring Michele Morrone and Gabrielle Union, for Prime Video Italy. Maccanico replaces outgoing CEO Thomas J. Ciampa, who is moving to lead distributor Vision Distribution.
In a statement, Rainbow Group said the hire is part of its plan to grow Colorado's role in Italian and international production. Straffi called Maccanico a driving force for a new strategic phase. Maccanico said he believes the industry requires Italian producers with a scalable, business-focused approach to stay competitive.
