World of Warcraft Forever to get new content updates every four months

Players diving into World of Warcraft Forever next week can expect a steady, but slower, stream of new content post-launch. According to IGN, principal game designer Kris Zierhut revealed the team is aiming for a major update roughly every four months, or three times a year.

This is a marked departure from the modern version of WoW, which has operated on a rapid eight-week content cycle. Zierhut told IGN that faster schedules tested in other modes "felt way, way, way too fast." The four-month target is intended to be a middle ground, avoiding both rushed updates and the infamous year-long content droughts of older expansions.

Zierhut clarified that the four-month gap doesn't mean players will have nothing new for that entire stretch. The team plans to timegate some content, unlocking new activities or events on a calendar in between the major patches. The goal is to avoid a "content fire hose" on patch day followed by months of silence.

Per a roadmap shown at BlizzCon, the first major update for Forever is slated for Spring 2027. If the schedule holds, that could mean new content arrives around March.

In a separate interview with IGN, Zierhut also shed light on the addition of the new Skyborne race. He stated the goal was to add more elves, the game's most popular race type, while maintaining faction balance. He bluntly added that many players "don't want to play a monster" like an Orc or Tauren, preferring something "prettier."

Meanwhile, GameSpot reports that character creation and name reservations are now live for players who have pre-installed the game and purchased the $30 Skyborne Heroic Pack.
