The live-action "Moana" is getting a rough reception, with many feeling it's a creatively bankrupt retread. Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana herself is the most agreed-upon bright spot, while Dwayne Johnson's return as Maui feels stale for a lot of people. The film's biggest problem is a profound lack of originality, with the story of her voyage beyond the reef feeling like a pointless copy. The only things that land are some decent humor, like when Jemaine Clement's Tamatoa shows up, and the visuals are fine, but not enough to save it.
