The real review
This sequel mostly gets a thumbs-up for being a fun, gory good time, even if the story's a total mess. People love the over-the-top humor and the slick, brutal visuals. Karl Urban's Johnny Cage is a huge hit, and characters like Kitana, Liu Kang, and the returning Kano get big cheers. The problem is the thin plot—the champions fighting Shao Kahn to save Earthrealm feels like a rehash, and that's where a lot of the criticism lands, with some calling the director's choices into question. It's a solid crowd-pleaser that works best when you don't think too hard.
