Apex Legends gets thick thighs, Hadoukens in Street Fighter crossover
Apex Legends is trading bullets for fists next month. According to IGN, the battle royale game is launching a crossover event with Street Fighter 6 on September 22.
The event, per IGN, will add eight character skins that transform Apex Legends into Street Fighter heroes. Sparrow will become Ryu, Alter will be Chun-Li, Mirage will transform into Luke, Gibraltar will be Akuma, Wattson will be Cammy, Caustic will be Blanka, and Pathfinder will become Dhalsim. A skin will also turn Lifeline into Li-Fen from Street Fighter 6.
The art team faced a unique challenge with these skins. IGN reports that art director Alisa Rastorgueva said the developers had to push the character models to match Street Fighter's muscular proportions. She stated the team gave the Legends "some of the thickest thighs we've ever done" for the game.
The map Olympus is getting a full makeover for the event, decked out with graffiti, giant Blanka balloons, and statues. A new Wildcard Takeover mode, called Apex KO, will replace guns with hand-to-hand combat. Players can select a fighter like Ryu or Chun-Li and enter a third-person mode to perform special moves, including throwing a Hadouken projectile.
Senior technical game designer Chris Ruvolo told IGN the team had to choose characters whose fighting styles, like projectile attacks, would fit a shooter game, ruling out grapplers like Zangief. The event goes live on September 22 at 10am PT.
