Blizzard announces open-world StarCraft shooter for 2030
A new StarCraft game is officially in the works, but it’s ditching the series' classic real-time strategy roots. Per IGN, the title is an open-world shooter and was revealed at BlizzCon 2026.
VGC reports the game is targeting a release in 2030, a notably distant launch window. The project is being led by Dan Hay, a veteran developer who previously worked on the Far Cry series.
The announcement followed a period of teasing from Blizzard, including glitches on the official StarCraft website. According to IGN, rumors about a shooter set in the StarCraft universe have circulated for years, with Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier previously discussing the project.
This marks Blizzard's third known attempt at a StarCraft shooter. Two previous projects, codenamed Ghost and Ares, were canceled in 2006 and 2019 respectively, VGC notes.
During the BlizzCon reveal, Hay stated the team's goal was to return to a universe "forged in interstellar war," describing the game as "an open-world shooter where every step is earned."
