Fable director says Xbox protected the reboot as a 'vital' franchise
IGN reports that Playground Games' long-awaited Fable reboot has survived a decade of development turmoil across Xbox. While other studios faced closures and layoffs, this project stayed on track.
According to the outlet, the team started forming in 2017. That was shortly after Microsoft closed Lionhead Studios, the original developer of the fantasy series.
The director, Ralph Fulton, told The Guardian that the franchise is seen as "vital" within Xbox. He claimed many there view Fable as part of the platform's core identity.
Fulton argued the game's unique blend of elements makes it important for the entire industry. This perceived value, per the report, shielded it during a period where Xbox shut down studios like Arkane Austin and The Initiative.
Playground Games also continued releasing its profitable Forza Horizon racing games during this time. IGN notes that likely helped fund the lengthy RPG development.
The new Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027.
