id Software and MachineGames forging closer ties post Xbox layoffs

In the wake of Xbox's recent 'reset' layoffs, the developers behind Doom and Wolfenstein are teaming up more than ever before. According to IGN, id Software studio co-director Marty Stratton confirmed the strengthened partnership with MachineGames at a press event this week.

Stratton said the studio is doing 'great' despite the layoffs, which saw about half of id's staff depart. He emphasized a deliberate effort to ensure the studio's viability moving forward, noting collaboration with MachineGames had kicked off earlier this year and both teams are 'incredibly bullish' on the path ahead.

The report speculates this deepened collaboration could be for MachineGames' next rumored project, heavily hinted to be Wolfenstein 3. Both studios already share a technological foundation, as MachineGames has used id's idTech engine for all its games. The move aligns with stated goals from Xbox leadership to focus on major franchises and accelerate development timelines.

IGN's article further notes an Amazon Wolfenstein TV series is in development, which could add incentive for the studios to ensure the next game is a standout release. Whatever the project, the close partnership between these two decorated FPS studios is now official.
