Final Fantasy Producer Says Square Enix Will Focus on New Games, Not Remakes

Square Enix is looking forward, not back, according to a key producer. In an exclusive interview with IGN, Final Fantasy producer and longtime director Yoshinori Kitase revealed the company's future focus.

Kitase stated that while remakes like the Final Fantasy VII trilogy happen when creators have strong personal connections to older projects, the publisher is now "more likely to invest in new titles and new games."

The conversation also touched on other media. Kitase expressed interest in future film and TV adaptations, telling IGN, "I think that it would be nice to have in the future games or TV series inspired by the story of Final Fantasy."

When asked what makes the Final Fantasy series special, Kitase highlighted character development and its unique cultural blend. He noted the series began with a strong European aesthetic before later incorporating more Japanese manga and anime influences from its creators.

The producer also shared his appreciation for games inspired by Final Fantasy, name-checking the turn-based RPG *Clair Obscure: Expedition 33* and calling the cycle of inspiration between developers "beautiful."
