Rumored Game Pass shake-up could axe day-one games as new titles arrive
Xbox just announced a big second wave of games for Game Pass this September, but it might be one of the last good months before a major overhaul. According to Eurogamer, the new arrivals include the massive exclusive Gears of War: E-Day, a prologue following Marcus Fenix during the initial Locust invasion.
Also joining the service are Dune Awakening, which is making its console debut with a new single-player mode, and the surprise sequel Minecraft Dungeons 2. The lineup is rounded out by several additions to the premium tier, including a Marvel co-op brawler, sequels to Planet of Lana and Ninja Gaiden, and the game Keeper.
However, a major leak reported by Eurogamer and Kotaku suggests the service's core benefits are set to change. A ResetEra user known as Slayven, whose past leaks have been accurate, claims a new Game Pass restructuring is planned for early 2027.
The alleged changes include a slight price drop but would remove the flagship perk of day-one game releases entirely. An ad-supported tier would be introduced, and cloud streaming would be stripped from the service, per the rumor.
When asked about the rumors by Forbes, Microsoft provided a non-committal statement. The company said it regularly tests offerings and has no finalized changes to announce, while confirming previously promised day-one games are still coming. Kotaku notes the response leaves the door wide open for changes after those commitments are fulfilled.
Noted leaker NateTheHate reportedly vouched for Slayven's source, saying they clearly have knowledge of internal matters. The potential shift follows Microsoft's recent move to limit cloud streaming hours and remove Call of Duty as a day-one offering.
