Ryan Murphy's 'The Shards' blurs fact and fiction in '80s LA

Ryan Murphy's latest FX series, 'The Shards', is now streaming, bringing Bret Easton Ellis' bestseller to life. The Hollywood Reporter notes the thriller follows a group of wealthy prep school teens in early-'80s Los Angeles.

But how much of the horrific, stylized story is real? According to TVLine, you might be surprised to learn Ellis' novel is at least partially based on true events. The show leaves viewers guessing about what actually happened and what was made up.

It's another slick, haunting entry from Murphy, this time diving into the dark side of privilege and memory.
