Sony faces lawsuits and anger over ending PlayStation discs
Sony's plan to stop making physical PlayStation discs starting in 2028 is kicking off a firestorm. A UK retail group condemned the move, calling it "a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice," per VGC. Meanwhile, a Dutch consumer group suing PlayStation argues the digital-only future proves its point that Sony alone controls game prices and usage rights, as reported by PC Gamer.
Pressure is mounting from other angles too. The 'Save the disc' movement is gaining momentum, with consumer groups and politicians piling on, Destructoid reports. And more lawsuits are expected, with Push Square noting Sony's lawyers are likely to be very busy.
Even the European Union has weighed in, with Eurogamer reporting the body admitted it cannot stop Sony, stating companies are free to offer games as they see fit. This comes as a new report, also via Eurogamer, highlights that games are often cheaper in physical shops, raising questions about the future for both gamers and retailers.
