The Division franchise tops 50 million players as third game builds

The Division series has now been played by more than 50 million people, according to an announcement from developer Massive Entertainment. The milestone arrives as the looter shooter property celebrates its tenth anniversary.

The first game launched back in 2016, with a sequel following in 2019. IGN notes that the sales for The Division 2 did not meet Ubisoft's internal targets. A new expansion for that sequel, titled Echoes of Central Park, is scheduled to launch on November 3.

Despite the sequel's commercial performance, the overall player count has apparently convinced Ubisoft to keep investing. The studio confirmed that Tom Clancy's The Division 3 is officially in active production at Massive.

The project recently saw a leadership change, per IGN. Former executive producer Julian Gerighty, who had been leading the title, has left Ubisoft. Creative director Mathias Karlson, who worked on The Division 2, is now at the helm.

Massive has sought to reassure fans following Gerighty's departure. In a social media post, the studio stated its teams remain committed to the project with an "unchanged commitment to the future." No release window for the third game has been announced.
