WoW: Forever beta floods Blizzard with 'craziest numbers' in 17 years

WoW: Forever beta floods Blizzard with 'craziest numbers' in 17 years

The beta test for World of Warcraft: Forever got swamped by players this week, causing major server strain and surprising its own developers. According to IGN, the beta's launch was so overloaded that players faced disconnects and extreme lag when trying to loot or accept quests.

Classic developer Josh Greenfield posted on social media about the overwhelming response. He called the beta numbers "the craziest I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard," adding that the team has "something really special here."

Senior game producer Tom Ellis offered an explanation for the technical issues on social media. He said the beta environment uses a much less powerful server setup than the live game, as betas historically don't attract massive crowds. The unprecedented traffic simply overwhelmed those systems at first.

Per the report, Blizzard's team worked to resolve the problems and has since stabilized the beta. Ellis noted that things are now running smoothly, with players flooding back in without issue. Fans online are already praising the game's updated lighting, new sound effects, and heavy dose of nostalgia.

World of Warcraft: Forever, a 'Classic Plus' MMO set in the original game's first year, was announced at BlizzCon 2026. Its full launch is scheduled for November 4.
